Learning Disabilities Awareness Month is a time to break stigma, highlight strengths, and build inclusion for people with learning disabilities (LDs) and ADHD.

This week we will be focusing on a key message from the Learning Disabilities Association of Ontario (LDAO) LD month campaign: LDs and ADHD: Unique minds, remarkable potential.

Did You Know?

Individuals with learning disabilities have average to above average intelligence. Contributions to society are made every day by individuals with learning disabilities, such as inventors, athletes, musicians, entrepreneurs, leaders, authors, etc.

These individuals, and many others, have shown that having a learning disability is not a barrier to achieving great things. Instead, they often develop unique strengths, such as creativity, resilience, and a different way of approaching problems, that help them excel.

LDs and ADHD are part of identity, not deficits. Individuals with LDs and/or ADHD are defined by their strengths and potential, not by limitations. Recognizing LDs and/or ADHD as part of identity helps shift systems from “fixing deficits” to building on abilities.

York Public Health has shared this important information for families about the increased risk of measles in the region and the importance of reviewing their child’s immunization records and ensuring they are up to date with their vaccinations. Please see this letter from York Region Health for more information.
