This month, we celebrate Ontario Flag Day on May 21 and Ontario Day on June 1, both opportunities to reflect on how fortunate we are to live in a province known for its natural beauty, diversity and vibrant communities.  

Ontario today is home to one of the most diverse populations in the world, a diversity that is reflected in our York Region schools and in the celebrations and events that bring our communities together throughout the year. This inclusivity enriches us all, builds unity and strengthens the sense of belonging we strive to foster every day for our students in our schools.

These commitments are closely connected to our Board priorities around Student Achievement, Inclusive Education and Well-Being. We want every student, family and staff member to feel welcomed, respected and valued in our schools. 

While celebrating Ontario Day, it is important that we acknowledge the history of this land, the First Peoples, our relationships with them, and our shared responsibilities to honour the treaties and to respect and care for the land. As a school board, this responsibility extends into our daily work with our students continuing to learn and teach Indigenous histories and perspectives.

We recently launched the Transitions Hub, just one example of our work to create supportive and inclusive learning environments. The hub provides helpful information, clear steps and strategies to support all students and their families during times of transition, with specific information and strategies to support students with special education needs.

We know this is just one example of the care and dedication staff and families put in to help students learn, grow and thrive. As we mark Ontario Day, we celebrate the land we live on with gratitude, and we thank families for their partnership in building inclusive, caring school communities where every student can learn, thrive and contribute to build an even stronger Ontario.
